I just finished a 12.5 km run as part of my training for a competitive marathon later this month.

What has that got to do with you?

Nothing really :)

Compare this to buying a computer. You can go about in two ways: buy a ready made, fully optimised machine OR buy loose pieces left right and centre and try piecing them all together (without knowing exactly how). 

Which of the two will perform best, you think?

Naturally, the one with conceptual integrity, where all bits are coordinated in a meaningful way. Computer 1, in other words.
